Reason:
The main reason for adding an a-bar to the front of the defender was to enhance the look and make it look more robust. As standard the defender came with lightguards which we felt looked quite heavy at the sides and the addition of the a-bar created a better balance at the front end. We also intended to improve the night time visibilty by adding a set of driving lights and so the a-bar provided the perfect platform.

Fitting:
Fitting the a-bar is probably the most straight forward procedure that you could tackle on your defender.

1. Remove the bolts that hold the bumper onto the front of the chassis.

2. set the a-bar onto the bumper and re-insert the bolts through the a-bar mouting holes and the bumper.

3. when the bolts are tight enough to prevent the a-bar from falling off mark the bumper top through the 3rd mounting point at the front of the a-bar mounting panel.

4. remove the a-bar and bumper from the chassis and drill the bumper top to accept a bolt the correct size.

5. when finally fitting our a-bar we cut a piece of 4mm rubber to place between the a-bar mounting point and the bumper mounting point. This was to fill in the low point that there is around the bumper mounting point. By filling in this space it prevents the a-bar from sitting back too far when it's fully tightened down.

Result:
The a- bar definitely bolsters the front end, but now it really needs the spot lights fitted to fill it out fully, and add the visual impact that we want.
