WIPAC Driving Lights

Our primary reason for fitting driving lights was to improve our night time visibility. Living in the countryside leads to plenty of night time driving down country lanes with pot holes the size of small cars and tractors doing 10 mph around blind bends. We found the standard headlights created a very yellow beam and the low down light could definitely be improved.

We opted for the WIPAC 100 Watt driving lights. They are reasonably inexpensive, powerful and they look the part. The lights were bought at the Land Rover show in Billing. With so many people selling them we managed to get a set from [Rebel 4x4] for £35.00 STG.

The lights are wired up to come on only on flash / full beam. There is also a dash mounted override switch.

The performance of the driving lights is great. They improve the beam intensity by almost double and create a very clean light which doesn't look too yellow and, as a result, doesn’t tire your eyes. For the money you really can't beat them. They also look badass and they really finish off the A-bar and front end. We are so impressed with them in fact that we want to fit a roof-bar to hold 4 more.

Installation - Always isolate your battery before dealing with car electrics - and for the 2004 defender observe the ignition sequence for this.

2 x 100 WATT LIGHTS
Use the heaviest gauge cable possible to ensure maximum brightness.

The live and earth are channeled along the side of the engine bay with cable ties

The earth for the lights is connected to a bolt at the top of the wheel arch

The live feed should be attached to the alternator positive post. It is preferable to running a cable right back to the battery

The live feed runs from the alternator to the relay along the side of the engine

The live feed is routed along the alternator cable bundle

Snip off the top of the spare grommet holes through the bulkhead to feed the lights and live feeds to the relay

The flash/high-beam wire is the blue/white wire running to the lefthand stalk. We used an adapted bullet connector inline to attach to the -86 connector on the relay.

The switch acts as an override for the lights. It was mounted under the blanker plate for the aircon control.

There is a small hole on the side of the fuse panel which is ideal for the relay-ground (-85) - just use a self-tapper

The relay and inline fuse holder are mounted with self tappers to the under-side of the fuse-panel.
